Using the seasons as your home decor inspiration

Whether it’s décor at your front door or the accent colours you use throughout your home, many people enjoy spicing up their homes with the colours of the season. There is no shortage of décor ideas for every season and every space, inside or out! So what are the popular ideas for the seasons?

Autumn

Fall and Halloween are many people’s favourite time of the year. Some of the elaborate outdoor displays for Halloween are incredible and can really get you into the Halloween spirit! Scary graveyards and coffins to ghouls and witches and ghosts hanging from trees, there is no shortage of ideas. Add some music and we suddenly have the neighbourhood favourite spot! Hay bales dressed up and painted as a pumpkin patch or ghosts are common in our neighbourhood.

We live in the country and actually had a neighbour ride around on a horse one year as the headless horseman on Halloween Night! The kids and adults all loved it!

Indoor decorating can include many of the Halloween themes or you can choose to go with a subtle fall theme. Owls, pumpkins, gourds, coloured leaves, bull rushes in your vases; there are so many different options to bring just a touch of the season into every room of your home.

You can even greet friends and family at the front door with a beautiful pot of fall Mums, the perfect fall flower and they bloom well into late fall! Candles scented in spiced pumpkin, cinnamon spice, or other tantalizing aromas are another way to welcome guests into any room of your home. Have a few toss pillows or blankets in rust, orange or your favourite fall shade and you have just completed a fall look perfect for your home.

Winter

I know many people who begin decorating for Christmas November 1st. Christmas is such an easy time to find décor and dress up your home as much or as little as you like. There are countless options for trees in a multitude of colours and sizes to fit any décor scheme. Although it can often be overwhelming looking for décor with your senses on overload with so many different options.

Every year I treat myself to one special ornament for our home and for our cottage. I make sure I take my time and find just the right item. Seasons and holidays are a great way to establish good old-fashioned family traditions, from wonderful décor to treats and fabulous smells.

The outdoor décor for the Holidays seems to get more elaborate each year. Lights that dance with music or Santa’s workshop in your front yard, there are options to suit every home and budget. Some households are quite traditional about their décor, while others are happy to change up the décor to reflect most current colour trend. As long as you decorate with love and attention to detail, your family and friends will appreciate it and enjoy their time with you in beautiful surroundings.

Every year I ensure we incorporate timeless winter décor. There is nothing colder than having your home warm and beautifully decorated for the Holidays – then January – March cold and empty!

Something to consider is a little winter décor that is holiday neutral. Warm fuzzy pillows and throws on sofas or beds that you can enjoy well into March during the cold months of winter. Candles in scents of spiced vanilla, cinnamon or other warm and hardy scents can make you feel cozy and snuggled in for the evening. Aromatherapy is a wonderful way to get through the winter blues. Tree branches make a wonderful accent in vases, add some light for the Holidays or a nice accent in the corner of a living room or dining room. Add some small winter pieces to make you smile and lift your spirit during the long, cold days of winter. Just make it meaningful for you!

Spring

Spring and Easter décor are so bright and cheerful with tulips and daffodils and the fresh scents of spring. Blossoms on the trees outdoors, small pots of flowers or bunnies to great friends outside. Decorating indoors with colourful eggs, bright pillows or placemats can really lift spirits after winter.

There are so many fun décor and craft ideas you can do with your children as well. Michaels craft store is full of fun and creative ways to spend time with the kids and create beautiful décor pieces for your home. We have snow globes in the shape of eggs with bunnies and flowers that always find their way onto our fireplace mantel. Mini chocolate egg treats grace the candy dishes and cupcakes with bright coloured patterns can be found in the kitchen. Watering cans, large and small, are a perfect little touch in anticipation of the beautiful summer blooms to come.

Summer

Summer is all about bringing the indoors outside. Outdoor living spaces and summer flowers abound in every corner of our yard. Fun little garden ornaments can be found peeking out from the flowers. Inside we have an abundance of fresh flowers as our various perennials bloom throughout the season. My candleholders are small flowerpots, or in the shape of ladybugs or butterflies. Honestly, most of my décor is focused on the outdoors where we spend a majority of our time in the summer. However, if you decide to decorate for the seasons, keep it meaningful and fun. Make sure it is something that makes you feel good and puts a big smile on your face. That’s how you know you’ve done well — it makes you and everyone else smile! Enjoy!
