Create warmth and spirit of holiday season with lights

The bright lights of last week’s Grey Cup Parade should help get Winnipeggers into a festive mood and provide the incentive to light up their own front yards during Take Pride Winnipeg’s Candle Power 2006: The Winnipeg in Lights contest.

As a gold sponsor of this annual  event, the WREB has its own special category, named the You Light Up Our City award. Residents may find a card in their mailbox from a REALTOR® who has nominated their property for this award. Nomination cards may be dropped off where a homeowner’s property has caught the eye of a REALTOR®.

Candle Power 2006: The Winnipeg in Lights contest encourages property owners to showcase their property with bulbs of all sizes, shapes, colours and power usage qualities (e.g. energy-efficient LED lights), as well as to take the next step and nominate someone from your neighbourhood as a contestant.

Beyond colourful lights, other holiday decorations are encouraged to create the warmth and spirit of the festive season.

“The holiday lighting across Winnipeg warms the hearts of residents and visitors throughout the season,” said Colleen

Kurlowich, manager of programs and operations for Take Pride Winnipeg.

An added incentive is that thousands of dollars in prizes can be won by contestants.

Last year, over 425 residents and businesses entered the contest.

The contest committee is hoping that there will be over 500 entrants in this year’s contest.

The contest is open to homeowners, businesses, schools, residential complexes and community groups.

The contest deadline is December 5. To find out more about this contest, you can phone Take Pride Winnipeg at 956-7590 or e-mail louie@takepride.mb.ca. Entry cards are available at Home Depot. You can also mail an entry to Take Pride Winnipeg at 502-177 Lombard Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3B 0W5.

All entrants will be invited to an awards reception to be held on Tuesday, December 19, at 7 p.m. at the Winnipeg Convention Centre.

Judging criteria includes colour and symmetry, innovative features, curb appeal and being litter free.

For the WREB award, REALTORS® will be looking at the artistic and visual merit of a property.

The entire city wins when property owners take pride. Our city is worth glowing about.
