Best decor trends to warm up fall gatherings

With cooler weather approaching and Thanksgiving just around the corner, it makes sense to start thinking about cozy ways to spruce up your home.

Perhaps you’ve experimented with a little fall DIY project in the past, or maybe this is the year you’ve decided to put your design and creativity to the test. Regardless of your motivation, there are plenty of ideas for every part of your home. From incorporating more texture and sustainable materials, to emulating fall foliage, we’ve outlined some of the upcoming fall trends you can implement below!

Natural hues with a pop of colour

Fall is so often associated with rich and earthy tones — think burnt orange, deep chocolate brown, muted greens, camel, and mustard yellow. This fall, in addition to the expected warm and calming colour palette, there’s an extra pop of colour you’ll notice online and in stores. Accent living rooms, tables, and furniture with these colours that are in right now: vintage blue, comforting red, periwinkle and off-white.

As well as natural light, the different colours we choose to paint our walls and accessorise our homes with all have a psychological effect on us. This might be why paint and colour experts like Dulux, Benjamin Moore, Pantone, and Farrow & Ball have conjured up Colours of the Year that add a touch of brightness, wellbeing, and hopeful optimism.

Cozy curves and round edges

Design influencer Jane At Home suggests the departure from straight lines and hard edges will continue to fade away in fall 2022, with softer lines and more sculptural looks creating a restorative space right from within  our homes. Architectural Digest also notes cozier and curvier furniture is making a comeback. Contemporary and on-trend, rounded-edged furniture is not only reflective of comfort, it also has a fun and feel-good factor to it. What’s more is these curves can be replicated all around the house!

Most furniture stores — both high-end and budget-friendly — will carry circular accent tables, rounded mirrors, curved armchairs, and sofas. Why not try a circular arrangement by assembling your living room furniture loosely around a central point like a round coffee table? When the work day is done, it’s the perfect way to create an ideal setup for lounging and conversations.

Woven elements

Woven is a broad term, yes, but that’s what makes it so easy to hop on this trend! Whether you go for macrame wall art or plant hangers (often found in Bohemian design), natural fibre rugs, or rattan furniture, adding in woven pieces to your fall décor is a surefire way to stay on trend. You may even have some of this on hand already! Lots of outdoor patio furniture today is made out of wicker or rattan, so instead of leaving it outside over the winter or putting it in storage, why not bring it indoors and use it through the colder months? Just make sure you’ve shaken out the cushions so you’re not bringing in bugs.

Look for small end tables or footstools, even baskets to hold your blankets.

Sustainable décor

The beginning of harvest season is a great time to decorate your home with natural and sustainable elements. As more people are shopping sustainably, that includes repurposing old furniture, or using recycled materials. Finding items at thrift shops to match your style, or ones that will with a little bit of restoration, is a great way to pick up a one-of-a-kind piece that still keeps you on trend.

There are also many natural resources on our doorsteps — or at least nearby. Branches, leaves, greenery, twigs, and other foliage are readily available when you step outside. Not only is it a fun and easy task to gather these items, it’s a budget-friendly, family friendly activity you and the kids can enjoy together! Log rounds and stumps — once properly treated and ready to be brought indoors — are also popular décor pieces, making for great side tables or table décor, but they might be harder to come by. Press flowers into a photo frame and hang it on your wall, fill a glass bowl with pinecones, or find taller plants that can be put into a vase and used as a piece of corner décor.

From dried flower wreaths, garlands, and assorted floral arrangements, to apple candle holders and fall fruit centrepieces in mason jars, you can feel good about the zero-waste DIY approach to decorating. Add candles and you won’t even be using electricity!

Pumpkins are a staple when we think about fall accessories and décor, and they’re here to stay — but with a twist! With the trend towards more vibrant colours, there are several ways to decorate and display them in, around and outside of your home — you just need to use a bit of imagination and paint!

Plaid and checkered patterns

Most people opt for plaid and checkered patterns every fall, regardless of whether they’re in style or not, but this year they’re on trend, according to Good Housekeeping. Just be sure to stay in those neutral tones. You can add buffalo checkered pillows to your couch, or toss a few throw blankets on the bed for a functional and cozy on-trend look.

Implementing these trends will ensure any fall gathering with friends or family will be a cozy one.
